Back To Life A Bladder Cancer Journey by Frank Sadowski is a first-person narrative covering the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment decisions, surgery and recovery of one man diagnosed with advanced bladder cancer in 2007. While doubtless of interest to bladder cancer patients, the book is written as an exciting adventure with many twists and turns that will appeal to all. While ultimately a story of survival, it carries strong themes of persistence, commitment, friendship and love. The frankness of the storytelling is skillfully offset with lighter touches and humor, and the story races to an unexpectedly heart-pounding ending.
“As a Stage 4 melanoma survivor, I found myself deeply moved by – and profoundly grateful for – Frank Sadowski's honest and enlightening account of what it's really like inside the cancer experience. But more than that, simply as a reader, I was enthralled with his effortless gift for compelling storytelling. Back to Life is full of humor, suspense, and grit, a medical drama that brims with heart and soul.”
-- Mary Elizabeth Williams, staff writer at Salon.com and author of "Gimme Shelter" and "A Series of Catastrophes and Miracles A True Story of Love, Science, and Cancer."
From the foreword by Sia Daneshmand, M.D.
This is the first book of its kind. There is a paucity of public attention to this prevalent disease, and bladder cancer research is severely underfunded. Back to Life A Bladder Cancer Journey highlights this important subject and encourages patients and physicians alike to understand the dilemma from the patient’s perspective and to appreciate the anguish they go through following the initial consultation. It is important to know that patients can fully emerge from the initial difficult recovery period following a radical cystectomy to lead unrestricted, productive lives. Through this honest and moving account of his cancer journey, Frank shows us how this can be done. His story should prove enlightening and inspiring to patients grappling with illness and difficult treatment decisions, as well as to medical professionals and indeed to anyone with an interest in how persons facing profound challenges find it within themselves to cope wisely and courageously.

It was with trepidation that I finally decided to read this book. I was an early purchaser, but not an early reader. "How much do I want to know about Frank Sadowski' bladder and connected parts," I asked myself. I would often pick up the book and then put it back down choosing to read something else, instead. Finally, though, my desire to read the book won-out over my worries that I would discover more about Frank than I wanted and I read the book over a couple of hot summer days in front of a fan. My worries were misplaced.I am not (as of yet, anyway) a cancer patient, but I, like all of us, have know several people who have taken a "cancer journey." This book allowed me to recognize the arc of emotions, struggle and experiences those people have travelled during their journey. It will also help me to be a better friend if I must watch them through the process in the future. I'm thankful for the free communication of the author's struggles and found myself relieved that his journey, though severely difficult at times, has resulted in his current healthy state.
The book is well paced. The reader knows that the outcome will eventually allow the author to write a book about it, but I found myself turning pages wondering what would happen next. Not an easy task with a known outcome, I would think. While I'm sure the author could easily have filled the pages with technical jargon, charts and graphs and graphic pictures and drawings, he decided to use his words and memories of his experiences for the reader. That was much appreciated.
Whether you or someone you know has bladder cancer, you should read this book. It was a very interesting well paced read and you will be better for having read it.

Back To Life A Bladder Cancer Journey Foreword by Sia Daneshmand MD eBook Frank Sadowski Reviews
Cancer is part of our lives whether we have or had it, live with one who does, or know a friend who does or did. Back to Life is about a very specific kind of cancer, but the author's skill as a writer and insight as a reflective person combine with his humor brilliantly. The result is at once very scary, really funny, and deeply enriching.
Full disclosure I have known Frank since we were in the same dorm in college, so I am hardly unbiased. Both our wives are cancer 'veterans' (let Frank explain why I use that term). Some of his stories I know from being there. That said, the way that he describes (or sometimes avoids describing) his experiences will pull you deeply into his amazing story.
We stood on a hilltop in Portland last month looking at distant Mt. Hood. We talked about the book and how we are each doing. Life is precious, and this book shows how one friend struggled to hold on to it. This book is one more reason we can be glad he did.
Frank shares his journey with bladder cancer in a narrative that enlightens others to the horrors of cancer. He and his wife, Laura, have certainly had their fair share of it, but obviously maintain a positive attitude and a sense of humor that is so clearly evident in this book. The book illustrates the effect on caretakers and the importance of the support of family and friends. You will laugh and cry for Frank and Laura as you read their heart-wrenching story of all they went through. I recommend this book to anyone who has either battled (or are battling) cancer and those that know of others who have it.
I knew Frank Sadowski slightly professionally in 1986. He was a brilliant merchant at a company by the name of Silo based in Philadelphia. From time to time over the years once Frank moved on stepping up to senior positions at various companies around the country his name always came up, after all he was a top executive in the consumer electronics field. When FB began some how Frank popped up on my friend list. I learned of his book and his cancer battle. Recently a friend told me he was diagnosed with badder cancer. I ordered Frank's book for my friend. I figured I should read it first so I could support him. Frank's story and his team are an amazing story. His doctor is truly amazing. His wife and special friend got him through. Frank's story should be read by anyone who is fighting cancer. When I now think of Frank I feel blessed to say we know each other. I thank God for his good health and strength. This book is a must read.
If life is all about making choices and living with the ensuing consequences, Frank provides a roadmap for listening, researching, evaluating and deciding. He weaves his thought process and subsequent experience in a readable and engaging text that can provide tools to anyone facing similar decisions. Frank is fortunate to have been supported by outstanding medical care, his family, friends and especially his wife, but ultimately, he is the one that chose to get "back on the bike" and to live life to his fullest. I cringed many times as I experienced Frank's pain through his storytelling, I smiled as he did his best to keep his sense of humor and I shed a few tears "riding along" his triumphant finish of Ride for the Roses.
This book will help educate those who want to support loved ones and friends in similar circumstances by giving a peak into the fear and doubt that cancer sufferers live with. As Frank's loved ones demonstrate, sometimes the simplest gestures can spur a patient to achieve more than they thought possible.
We bought this book because our doctor only answered questions if we asked them. Author Frank Sadowski provided those questions for us with this very valuable reference for anyone going through bladder cancer. He tells it like it is! We reached out to him and we even Skyped. We felt armed and prepared for our next doctor visit post op. Our doctor was floored with all the questions we asked; he was challenged. In the end, we got the second opinion visit we needed with the correct type of doctor. We dodged a bullet because this author helped us to know the right questions to ask to get at the right answer for us. Do yourself a favor and read this book BEFORE you go for any surgery; a critical tool for due diligence. I'd give this 10 stars if they were available.
